Couponing Apps: What to download and How to Use them?

For a long time, paper coupons were only way a shopper could save at the grocery store besides sale and clearance prices, but now the digital age has brought new and easier ways to shoppers to save instantly and/or on top of the grocery bills.

Coupon apps have been making a huge splash in the last year with apps like Checkout 51, Snap Saves by Groupon and Zweet. These coupon apps allow shoppers to submit their store receipts via their smart phones so they can redeem their purchases for savings offered by various companies on various products. Once enough offers are redeemed, you can then request a cheque for your accumulated savings which is then sent in the mail. Some apps like Cart Smart, Zweet or Save.ca have a paypal option for cash out instead. Some of these coupon apps companies also have an option to scan and upload your receipt online if you don't have a iphone or android phone.

Coupgon, which is the first of its kind, allows for instant savings at the cash register, instead of the cash out option. This app which is only accepted at limited grocery stores currently like Giant Tiger, Atlantic Superstore, Co-op etc. is used in store to redeem savings instantly like an in-store coupon. You activate the app in-store by scanning a QR code found at the cash register and then selecting the coupons you wish to redeem. The cashier will then check the coupons on your phone and then put them through at the cash. Simple as that.

Here is a list of the current coupon apps available:

Checkout 51 - Scan your receipt via your apple device, android device or online with camera/scanner to redeem weekly offers on your groceries. Huge variety of offers refreshed every thursday. Cash out via cheque at $20 minimum.

Snap Saves by Groupon - Scan your receipt via your apple device, android device or online with camera/scanner to redeem weekly offers on your groceries. Small variety of offers refreshed every day. Cash out via cheque at $20 minimum.

Zweet -  Scan your receipt via your apple device, android device to redeem weekly offers on your groceries and earn zweet points towards gift cards. Tends to have more international food offers and is refreshed every Wednesday. Cash out via cheque or paypal at $20 minimum.

Cart Smart - Scan your receipt via your apple device, android device to redeem weekly offers on your groceries. Small variety of offers which are refreshed every Friday. Not an easy system to use but cash out is at $5 minimum I believe and its via paypal.

Save.ca -  Scan your receipt via your apple device, android device to redeem weekly offers on your groceries. Small variety of offers which are refreshed every Thursday. This app hasn't changed its main offers since it came out and the few new offers that appear on friday are generally gone in 2 days, so grab them fast. Cash out is at $5 minimum and its via paypal.

Coupgon - Redeem digital coupons at the cash register for instant savings. No scanning or waiting for cheques here. Available on blackberry, apple devices and android devices and requires the use of a data plan while at the store. Decent variety of offers that are refreshed on every Thursday. Coupon offers must be selected on the app and then a QR code scanned at the cash register in order to redeem in store.

Other than the coupgon app, all of these apps can be used in combination with coupons. All of these apps can be used in combination with each other, sale prices and other discount cards, points etc unless the offers fine print states otherwise.

I plan to do a write-up about each app individual, so you can learn about them more in depth.
